Investigating Stale RADIUS Sessions

WayaDesk / FreeRADIUS

A stale session can confuse support and package enforcement. The operator may see an old connection while the customer reports being offline. Begin by identifying the evidence behind the record rather than immediately deleting it.

Establish the session history

Find the relevant subscriber, router and timestamps. Compare the last reported activity with the customer’s account of the interruption. Determine whether the underlying service is still reachable and whether new accounting information is arriving.

Separate observation from policy

A stale session record is not permission to change paid time or remove a suspension. It is also not a reliable basis for claiming that another device is currently using the account. Confirm the actual access path before changing customer service.

  • Preserve the record needed to investigate the interruption.
  • Check whether the affected path is local or RADIUS-based.
  • Observe a controlled reconnect and the resulting records.

Use the smallest corrective action

Follow the supported recovery procedure for the installation. Avoid broad cleanup that removes unrelated customer history. Record the action and verify that authorised access works afterwards without creating a second entitlement or another payment.

Prevent repeat confusion

If stale records recur, examine the reporting and shutdown paths with the installer. Staff need a clear description of which indicators can be trusted during an interruption. A cleaned-up screen is not proof that the underlying reporting problem has been resolved.

Frequently asked questions

Should I delete every old session during an outage?

No. Preserve useful evidence and use a targeted, supported recovery process.

Can a stale record prove that credentials are being shared?

Not by itself. Establish the current session state and the supported enforcement policy first.
